FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  • What is the goal of the Bailando en Tejas radio program?
The program's goal is to educate the public on the history of Tejano music, including its origins, historically important musicians and singers, types of ensembles, distinct varieties, and impact on the Mexican American and broader musical community. This is done by playing varieties of Tejano music, going back primarily to the time period of the 1940s to the mid-1980s. In addition, Bailando en Tejas broadcasts Tejano music that is ignored by commercial radio stations in the Houston radio market.
  • Who is the target listening audience of Bailando en Tejas?
Bailando en Tejas is primarily aimed at Tejano and Latin people of all age groups. However, individuals from a variety of distinct racial and ethnic groups listen to the program and appreciate the quality and feeling of the Texas-grown music that is broadcast.
  • What needs of the listening audience does Bailando en Tejas meet?
The Bailando en Tejas radio program educates the younger generation of the richness and variety of Tejano music. Since current Tejano formats on commercial radio stations largely ignore many Tejano musicians and bands, the current generation has a very limited perception of what Tejano music really is. Bailando en Tejas also broadcasts much of the music from prior to the 1980s, a time period when Tejano music was at a level of sophistication, variety, and creative arrangements.
  • What other educational purpose does Bailando en Tejas have?
History is the educational purpose of the program. There is no better way to educate about history, culture, values, and social issues than through music. Some of this history includes the family backgrounds of prominent musicians, some who are alive and some deceased, including their particular sound and their contributions to the Tejano music experience.
